Aeternvm Vale

Buffy The Vampire Slayer has apparently influenced millions (okay, this is a gross exaggeration! It’s really like 50,000) of womenfolk in England to abandon The Church and flock to witchcraft. Paganism. Wicca. Some intellectual crumpet slags did a study and pulished their findings in Women and Religion in the West, the hottest publication evers.
Dr. Kristin Aune, the head honchHO involved with the study, says that: ”Because of its focus on female empowerment, young women are attracted by Wicca, popularized by the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In short, women are abandoning the church.”
The cat has got The Church of England’s tongue or something, because they respectfully “declined to comment on the study.” Don’t be surprised if paperback editions of the Malleus Malefaricum crop up at Barnes and Noble, though.
Buffy was a stellar show and all but it never inspired me to take up the pentagram. Willow was so creepy when she was all wiccaed out. She even had black eyeballs and irises at one point.

Willow was my favourite character. Wiccas are cool! (Missing Link dares you say otherwise)
Maybe Kristin should wonder that if The Church would stop saying “French kissing before your wedding gets you straight to hell” and stuff like this, less peeps would wanna leave.
Wicca’s been on a rise for decades. I don’t do witchcraft anymore but I still live my life by the 13 goals of a witch. I wish everyone would.
Hi Jaded! Good point. Yeah. The Church does chicks dirty sometimes.
My favorite characters were Cordelia and Spike. Cordy’s lame, but whatevs.
um. first of all, best show in the history of life, and if joss whedon sez there is or isn’t a god, or if i should or shouldn’t be a witch, i’d totes listen. BUT the show never straight on delt with it- when buff is asked if there is a god, she answers ‘the jury’s still out.’
i don’t think aune was blaming the show, tho, but just using it to set the example that feminism is rampant now, and because traditional christianity is not very respectful of women’s rights (no female priests allowed til 1994, no female bishops allowed til last month), many women may feel the religion to be invalid. here’s a less-blamey article:

willow was awesome as the bad witch. also awesome as the gay vampire.
anners- u forgot drusilla!
Hi Panders! Ah, Drusilla! She was aiight. I think they based Drusilla and Spike on Caligula and his sister… Drusilla… or am I overreaching?
I don’t think she was blaming the show either, so thanks for adding that other link.
Huh? How’d that get here? Wanna delete?
^^ Ooh! I got pinged! Felt good, too…
Glad to be of service.
I think the reason why women left church has nothing to do with women wanting to know more about witchcraft because of a tv show… And I never wanted to be a witch even though I loooove the show, what that show inspired me though was to know a little more about vampires and a desperately urge for shagging David Boreanaz… oh, my, god! , david Boreanaz was hoooot!
and indeed, Willow was creppy!!! I´m glad to know though I´m not the only crazy lover of this show.. I feel validated now! haha
I loved Buffy! One of the best shows ever. Didn’t inspire me to become a Wicca though.
Spike was my fave charecter. Oh, and Anya was great too!
And of course I meant “character” not “charecter”
Do you really need to abandon the church to dabble in wicca?
I doubt anyone gave up on their beliefs because of a fictional show about ephing vampires. Panders is right, a lot of religions aren’t respectful of women’s rights. Did you know that in the middle ages it was forbidden to try and lessen the suffering of a woman in labour as the pain was considered punishment for original sin? – wankers! Why on earth should people suffer because some women millions of years ago was given an apple from a talking serpent who lived in a magical tree.
