Stephen King doesn’t think Stephenie Meyer, the slag who wrote the Twilight Books, writes very well. That Stephen King is a smart, smart man. Anyway, in an interview with USA Weekend he links Steph Meyer and JK Rowling together (only because they both speak “directly to young people” ), but he breaks that link when it comes to the quality of their writing.
Sayeth Stephen: “Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”
That said, he thinks he knows why she’s so gosh darn popular: “People are attracted by the stories, by the pace . . . it’s very clear that she’s writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It’s exciting and it’s thrilling and it’s not particularly threatening because it’s not overtly sexual.”
I have nothing to say about the quality of her writing because I’ve never read any of her awful books. But in her defense, there are more than just young girls are reading the shiz. So maybe there’s more to the appeal than what he just said. Maybe a whole slew of people and not just young girls are under the delusion that love begets sex and so on.
